What have Year 1 been up to in the Autumn term…

We have been practising our phonics every day! We learn our sounds and begin to spot special friends in real and alien words. We then have a go at reading with our friends using the sounds we have been learning.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

We have been reading the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have been learning to retell the story using vocabulary from the story and including all parts of the story! We have been learning all about how to write a simple sentence using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

We thoroughly enjoy going to the wood with Butterflies of Britain. This half term we have been learning about fire safety and learning about to light a fire.

P.E days

Our PE days will be Tuesdays and Fridays. Please can you ensure your child has a PE kit in school on a Monday and we will send home on a Friday. I ask for it to be in on Mondays as sometime we will do extra PE lessons if the weather is nice. Please ensure all clothing in their PE bag is named.

Woodland continues this year Butterflies of Britain. Year 1 will be in the woods on Thursdays. Children will need a change of clothes for the woodlands, if it is cold and raining we will still be going into the woods so please ensure they have appropriate clothing. Please can all children have wellies in school every day as we often go for an explore in the woods and on the field throughout the year.

Throughout the school there is an expectation that all children read every day. I understand that it can tiring being at school and then going home to do reading etc however, I do not expect your child to read all of their book in one night, but I do expect them to do at least 5 minutes reading every night. In class, if your child reads every day they will be given a certificate and will be able to add a leaf to our reading tree, which I hope will fill up quickly. If your child is not quite onto a reading book level we will send home letter cards where you will able to make words with them and encourage them to sound out and blend words independently. Please if you read with your child write in their yellow reading journal books. We try to change books on a daily basis.

Home learning

In year 1 children are given a home learning with a home learning menu on. It is expected that they complete a particular number of them by the half term. If children can bring their books in on a Thursday I can then look and share their home learning and send the books back out on a Friday.

Class dojo

Class dojo is continuing this year. I will do my best to update on a daily basis, however I normally post a weekly update each Friday. If you require another invite to Class Dojo please do not hesitate to ask.

Snack money/lunchtimes

Children in Year 1 are still entitled to free school meals. Lunchboxes need to be taken to the canteen before the start of the school day. You will need to book jacket potatoes/school packed lunches with Lillian in the canteen. In Year 1, children are able to bring in money to buy a snack at breaktime. Please send money in a named purse/wallet and 50p is more than enough for them to buy something. If you do forget their purse/wallet but would like to give them some money please pass it to a member of the Year 1 team and we can ensure it is kept safe until breaktime.
